Project Impossible: Part 2 - Help! I only have an excel spreadsheet and a week to produce PDF reports for 300 clients.

I have been called many names during my career. The one that stuck the most was 'captain inventive' from PwC director Pete Maxted, who now is the IT Director at Tui.

Client: Financial Services Company
Project: Software Development
Product: Client Reporting System
Build time: 1 week

I decided to present a showcase of my previous work and the kind of projects I've been involved with to give you a flavour of what's possible. Today's project is the Client Reporting System (CRS).

A financial services client needed to be able to produce a set of PDF reports for their clients. They only had an excel spreadsheet to work from.

The software I wrote allowed an excel file to be uploaded and a list of clients produced. From there a completed set of PDFs could be downloaded or an individual client report. As you can see the quality of the report comes from a well designed and innovative coding to get the graphs just right.

Here's a set of pictures demonstrating how the system works. It was created in a week using Yii framework from scratch. The server, domain, security certificate and firewall was setup within a week too.

hopgood.eu showcase - software to build a PDF from an excel spreadsheet - In this case using dummy data for testing.
In addition to producing a PDF, multiple PDFs can be downloaded in a zip file. Here's the entire process.

step 1 upload the excel file to the CRS system from hopgood.eu

step 2 - view list of clients and click an individual or download all

step 3 - the client view - this time filtering through the excel sheet to see all the records for this client

step 4 - download all PDFs as a zip file or

step 5 - an example PDF from the zip file

As a digital custodian I'm often asked to help out directors with their processes and systems, choosing a safe way to protect their digital assets.
